Network frequently asked questions

Our networks are designed to give customers additional assurance around the quality of care they receive for specific conditions following a referral to secondary care.  Through a tender process we select providers that are aligned in the pursuit of better quality, efficient healthcare. 

We first launched our networks in 2019 and strong customer demand has led to expansion across multiple conditions.

Hospitals propose consultants to be included that meet the requirements of the network.  Requirements include:

• Evidence of expertise in the condition area
• Practice delivery to national guidelines (e.g. GIRFT, NICE)
• Submission to appropriate registries and PHIN
• Engagement with operational processes, e.g. billing and appointment booking

lf you are an Aviva-recognised practitioner, get in touch with your partner hospital to understand how you can join the network.  Inclusion into the network is organised by the hospitals and needs to be agreed by both Aviva and the participating hospital.

Yes. You can still see Aviva customers if you are recognised by us. However, where we have a network, we actively promote these to all our customers.

Our network has been constructed through a tender process with hospitals. You need to have practising privileges with a hospital that is in our network. If you are unable to find a hospital that is local to you within the network, contact us at HCNWK@aviva.com. Please note that consultant inclusion in the network must be agreed by both Aviva and the hospital.

Aviva will be focussed on working with the selected providers for each network for the contract duration. There will be potential for new entrants when network contracts are reviewed.

Networks are our flagship initiatives embodying value-based healthcare in the private sector.  As such, we will be actively promoting these networks to our customers and directing them to network providers when they contact us.  Aviva customers will have different policies and, in a significant proportion of policies, customers will be required to only see consultants who are part of the Aviva networks.  We require our customers to always check with us and obtain pre-authorisation before proceeding with their treatment.

For each network, we have selected the hospitals that best matched our aims across all of the following 3 elements:

1. Clinical quality, demonstrated through data transparency and commitment to collecting and sharing clinical measures;
2. Customer experience, demonstrated through services and processes designed to deliver a seamless customer journey;
3. Value for money. 

Yes. Our networks are not designed to disrupt existing claims. However, on new claims, we will be supporting our customers to access consultants who specialise in our networked conditions to receive care within the network facilities.

There should be no material changes to how you practice clinically; Aviva will place greater focus on the clinical outcome measures you are already familiar with. There will be some operational process changes to enable ease of transaction for all parties. Please get in touch with your hospital for the specific network criteria and operational changes. 

We have worked with our Network providers to ensure that processes such as referrals enable ease of transaction for all parties involved. Please get in touch with your hospital for the specific processes designed around this. 

For patients treated as part of our networks, the billing will change as fees are now paid by the hospital to you rather than through us.  It is important to note that patients treated on the network can't be billed for shortfalls.  Please get in touch with your hospital for the specific processes designed around this.

There is no change to patients treated outside of the network compared to your current process.
