What is share dealing?

Share dealing is a way of buying or selling stocks and shares, also known as equities, in publicly listed companies and other exchange traded investments (ETIs). You’ll need an Aviva Stocks & Shares ISA, an Investment Account or self-invested Aviva Pension (SIPP) to trade shares with us.

How share dealing works with us

  • Clear trading fees

We charge a flat fee of £7.50 for buying or selling shares and other exchange traded investments. Plus, an Aviva Share Charge of 0.4% of the value of your investment – to a maximum of £45 a year in your ISA or investment account or £120 in your pension. For a full list of possible charges read our FAQs.

  • Use the account that suits you

Invest using either your Aviva Stocks & Shares ISA, Pension or Investment Account. Just fund it with cash and then choose the stocks and shares you’d like to buy.

  • The right tools

Our award-winning online platform makes buying or selling quick and easy. Useful features like live quotes and limit orders give you more control over the price of every share deal. Read more about these in our FAQs.

Pick your investments

Shares

If there’s a company you like or think is going places, you can invest directly in their future by buying shares in them (also called equities). With us you’ll be able to trade UK shares available on the London Stock Exchange.

Exchange traded funds

An exchange traded fund (ETF) is a group of shares which usually track the performance of an index, for example the FTSE 100®. This can be a good way to spread your investments so you’re not tied to the fortunes of a few companies.

Investment trusts

An investment trust is a company quoted on a stock market, with the sole aim of investing capital raised through the sale of shares.

Then start buying and selling online

Our online platform makes share dealing easy. When you've found an investment you’re interested in, just choose the value or amount you want to buy. You can trade when the market is open — between 8am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

You’ll generally get a live quote, which will be the best price at that moment. Live quotes may not always be available, so instead you’ll be offered a best market price instead. You can also choose a limit order, which is a fixed price you want to buy or sell at. Share sales will be settled and in your account two days after your trading date.

Selling with us works the same way.

Remember, investments can fall in value and you could get back less than you’ve put in. Find out more about the risks by reading our important information for investors (PDF 56 KB).

Unsure about shares?

If buying shares doesn’t seem like it’s for you, think about putting your money into investment funds instead. Here you’ll buy into a selection of investments which are either run by a fund manager or track an index, like the FTSE 100®.
