What is a catalytic converter?

Catalytic converter is a vehicle part which is attached to a car’s exhaust pipe. It helps reduce all the harmful emissions from the vehicle's engine. It uses special materials to change those bad gases into less harmful ones before they go out into the air.

Why are catalytic converters stolen?

It’s these ‘special materials’ that make catalytic converters desirable to thieves. Catalytic converters contain rhodium, palladium and platinum, metals which are considered ‘precious’ and can be very valuable.

Can catalytic converter theft be prevented?

There are a few different ways you can help prevent yourself from falling victim to catalytic converter theft:

  • Keep your car in a locked garage
  • Park with your exhaust close to a wall or fence to make it harder to get to
  • Park somewhere well-lit and populated so your car isn't hidden from view
  • Upgrade your home security by getting cameras that overlook your car
  • Get your catalytic converter forensically marked which makes it harder for thieves to dispose of
  • Have an aftermarket guard fitted which can make it a lot harder for thieves to get your catalytic converter, if you fit one of these however you must tell your insurer as it’s classed as a modification
