Inheritance Tax calculator

Our inheritance tax calculator could help you work out how much inheritance tax – if any – might be due on your estate.

Why calculate inheritance tax?

The quick answer to that is it will help you plan ahead.

Inheritance tax may be due on your estate when you die. By estate, we mean everything you owned while you were alive, including your house, possessions, and money.

At the moment, your estate won’t pay any tax on anything below £325,000. After that, anything you leave to others will currently be taxed at 40%, subject to certain reliefs and exemptions.

Calculate how much inheritance tax could be due on your estate

To estimate any inheritance tax due on your estate when you die, we'll need to know about the value of your assets and debts. This includes things such as property, investments, personal possessions, cash savings, loans and credit cards.

Our calculator is for educational purposes only and is not an exact representation of how much Inheritance Tax might be due on your estate when you die.

Enter the estimated amounts below. Your answers are just for the final calculation - we don't store them anywhere.

This could include holiday homes or properties you own but rent out.

You may choose to transfer some or all of your main property to your direct descendants.

This could include cash savings, life insurance that's not written into trust, cars, furniture, paintings, jewellery, etc.

Let us know the value of any current trusts you've set up to pass assets onto a beneficiary.

This could includes stocks and shares ISAs (not cash ISAs), bonds and shares.

Anything you leave to your spouse won't count towards your estate's inheritance tax liability, no matter how much your estate is worth. This only applies if you're married or in a civil partnership.

Tell us about any debts and gifting

Enter the estimated amounts below. Your answers are just for the final calculation, we don't store them anywhere.

How much is currently left to pay on your main mortgage as of today?

This is the total amount of mortgages remaining on any further properties.

Let us know the combined balances of all credit cards you have.

How much do you currently owe in loans?

Gifts include things like money, cars or any other items of value such as jewellery.

Gifts totalling £3,000 or less within a tax year don't count towards the value of your estate. So if you'd given gifts worth £6,000 in one tax year, you’d only need to declare £3,000.

Gifts don’t count if it’s for a wedding or civil ceremony when you've given the below in any tax year:

·       You gift up to £5,000 to a child

·       You gift £2,500 or less to a grandchild or great grandchild

·       £1,000 or less to a relative or friend

They also don't count if the gift is for a charity or the value of anything given is worth £250 or less in any tax year.
