How do you know your insurance will be there when you need it?

Life is challenging enough. A serious injury or illness can often happen at the worst, most unexpected moment, turning everything upside down. It can bear a significant impact on you and your loved ones physically, mentally and also financially. Whether you're thinking of leaving something behind for your loved ones after you're gone, or you're finding yourself in a situation where you need to make a claim, protection insurance can make a huge difference. The pay-out from your insurance provider could help make that difficult time a little easier. The first step is to choose the right protection policy for you.

Why could I need a protection policy?

From buying a home and raising a family, to thinking about what would happen if you were unable to work... there are many reasons to consider taking out a protection policy. Whatever your situation, protection insurance could make a difficult time more manageable. Some of the more common types of protection insurance are summarised below.

Income protection could provide some financial support. It's designed to replace some of your wages, and help you cover essentials such as your mortgage, energy bills and food. Critical illness pays out a lump sum if you’re diagnosed with a medical condition that your insurance provider covers.  Life insurance also pays out a lump sum - but to your loved ones after you’ve died. This can be used to help pay off an interest-only mortgage, or go towards living costs and monthly outgoings, such as rent. Its worth mentioning that generally for these types of policies there is no cash-in value at any time. It's worth checking this  with your insurance provider before taking out a policy.

How do I know they'll pay out if I need to claim?

At Aviva, we understand the importance of your recovery and helping you return to normality. Our claims teams are trained to look at each claim and assess on a case by case basis. In 2023, we paid out £53.5m to our income protection customers to help them manage financially after suffering an illness or injury Footnote [1]. We supported our critical illness customers in 2023 by paying 5,048 claims, with the average payout being £71,833 Footnote [1]. We also paid 99.3% of our life insurance and terminal illness claims, totalling more than £761.7m Footnote [1]. We carefully consider all claims and aim to be as transparent as possible with our customers, and it's no exaggeration to say those numbers have made a genuinely life-changing difference.

Working with Macmillan

Over half (58.4%) of our critical illness claims at Aviva in 2023 were for cancer.

By working with Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists, we can help to speed up individual protection claim payments for some critical illness customers who have a cancer diagnosis. This helps reduce the time you have to wait for us to settle your claims.

In 2023, hundreds of customers who made a claim for cancer benefited from our claims handlers speaking directly to a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist. We were able to help more customers and their families get vital clinical and emotional support, and also signpost to financial support quickly, when they needed it most.
