Life Insurance while pregnant

Find out whether life insurance is the safety net you need.

Pregnancy can spark a range of emotions; from excitement - to reflection about how prepared you feel for the new arrival! When the hormones kick in, you may start to feel protective of your unborn child. It's natural to think about how you can protect yourself and your family financially - now and in the future. If you're considering life insurance, this article could help you understand the options available to you.

Can you get life insurance while pregnant?

Yes, you can get life insurance while pregnant.

What are the benefits of life insurance while pregnant?

Life insurance has many benefits:

  • Financial security. Life insurance provides financial protection for your family, should the worst happen. It can cover living expenses, childcare, and future education costs for your children.
  • Peace of mind. If the unthinkable happens, life insurance will provide cover to help support your family.
  • Locking in rates. Applying for life insurance while you're younger and generally healthier could help lock in lower premiums for later in life.

When asked for my weight, do I put my pregnancy weight or my usual weight?

We understand your pregnancy weight is temporary. You're usually asked to confirm your weight when filling out a life insurance application, but that's expected to be your pre-pregnancy weight. Insurers just ask for this information so they can assess your normal, general health.

When asked if I smoke, is that before or during pregnancy?

Insurance companies usually consider your smoking status over at least the last 12 months.

At Aviva, you're considered an 'ex-smoker' if you stop smoking between 12 months and 5 years ago, and a 'non-smoker' if you either stop over 5 years ago or if you've never smoked. Premiums are usually lower for non-smokers, but ex-smokers can expect to pay less than current smokers for life insurance.

When asked if I drink alcohol, is that before or during pregnancy?

When applying for life insurance, you should let your insurer know what your usual alcohol consumption amount is. You may have cut back since finding out that you're pregnant, so this would be your pre-pregnancy alcohol amount.

If I already have life insurance, do I need to tell my insurer if I become pregnant?

If you already have a life insurance policy, you don't need to inform your insurer about your pregnancy. Pregnancy does not affect your existing cover or premiums.

If you're ever unsure about the terms of your Aviva policies, you can reach out to us via our contact us page or log into your MyAviva account to find further help and support. Alternatively, you can speak to a financial adviser. If you don't have a financial adviser, you can find one at unbiased.co.uk. Please be aware that you may need to pay for this advice.

Will pregnancy increase my life insurance premiums?

Most insurers won't take pregnancy into account and won't increase your premiums, decline or defer an application solely because of pregnancy.

What are the alternatives to life insurance while pregnant?

If you don’t want to get life insurance during your pregnancy, there are some alternatives which could give you some financial peace of mind. Please note, there is no cash-in value at any time with these policies.

  • Our income protection plan pays part of your income if you cannot work due to illness or injury. It can be helpful if any complications happen during or after your pregnancy, which affect your ability to work. This article explains more about how our income protection policy works.
  • Our Critical Illness Plan pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a serious illness, which can help cover medical bills and other expenses.
