What type of car insurance do I need to drive within Europe?
When taking your car on holiday making sure you’re covered is something that should be added to the long to-do list.
Our Comprehensive and Third party, fire and theft cover options on our Aviva Motor policy both provide you with the minimum cover you need to drive your insured vehicle in most European countries, which is third party only cover. This covers your legal liability to others – for example, if you injure someone in a motor accident or damage their property. However, it won’t cover you for loss of, or damage to, your own vehicle. For this kind of cover, you need to have our optional Foreign Use cover which is only available with Comprehensive cover.
Our optional Foreign Use cover gives you a similar level of cover to what you have in the UK, when driving in the countries listed in your policy booklet. Cover is valid for up to 90 days for one trip and up to 180 days during the year.
If you purchase our optional Foreign Use cover for comprehensive cover, you also have the option to add European breakdown cover for additional peace of mind travelling abroad. This optional cover ensures that you are well-protected against unforeseen vehicle issues across Europe.
