Is car insurance for over 50s cheaper?
It can be! But car insurance premiums aren’t simply based on your age and how long you’ve cruised the roads. They’re based on your car, its insurance group, your driving history and other factors.
There are perks to being 50 plus, in addition to your brilliant popular culture references, it could mean cheaper car insurance.
Over 50s are sometimes thought to be lower risk drivers who are less likely to make a claim. And this could mean cheaper car insurance from years of driving experience.
How can I try to keep my car insurance costs low?
Here are five tips to help you find or keep a lower premium when exploring car insurance:
- Consider the type of car you drive – the type of car you drive can impact your premium and may be less expensive to insure.
- Make mileage matter – check how much you’re driving based on your mileage. Often, the lower the mileage, the less money out of your pocket.
- Park safely – you may be able to get lower premiums if you park your car in a drive or garage rather than on the road overnight.
- Be careful with additional drivers – putting yourself on a policy for a young, inexperienced driver may lower their premium. But it could also raise yours. More importantly, make sure you're not in danger of 'insurance fronting,' or declaring you're a main driver when you're not. - Pay in full – it may help reduce the price of your car insurance if you can afford to pay the amount in full annually rather than monthly.
What’s covered by car insurance
Pick between two levels of cover for each car. Our Third party, fire and theft insurance covers less but still gives several notches more protection than the basic ‘third party’ cover everyone needs to drive in the UK. Our comprehensive insurance offers robust coverage, including the costs of damage to your own car or van, such as in the event of an accident.
Here we’ve listed out how each type covers you – and how much for, where there’s a limit on what we’ll pay out.
Comprehensive Car | Third Party Fire and Theft | |
---|---|---|
Loss or damage Money towards a new vehicle if someone steals yours, or we'll arrange and pay for repairs if they're needed after an accident or fire Footnote [1] | Included The market value of your vehicle | Included The market value of your vehicle Fire and Theft only |
What you owe others If you injure someone, damage their vehicle or wreck their property in an accident, we’ll pay to put it right | Included | Included |

Geographical restrictions apply | Included | Included Fire only |
