Electric cars and towing

Find out about towing a caravan with your electric car, how much you can tow and whether you'll need special insurance.

If you're thinking of towing a caravan or trailer on your next holiday but aren’t sure whether it's possible with an electric vehicle, you're in the right place.

In this article, you'll learn more about towing a caravan with your electric vehicle (EV), including how much you can tow, whether you'll need special insurance, and more essential tips before you hit the road.

Can I tow a caravan with my electric vehicle?

While the government allows towing a caravan or trailer, there are still some important considerations regarding your driving licence and weight restrictions.

It needs a type approval

Whether electric or otherwise, all vehicles need a 'type approval' Footnote [1] to tow a caravan or trailer. In a nutshell, this is proof that it meets the government's rules and requirements from a technical point of view. This is to help ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

What's meant by the towing capacity of an electric vehicle?

Generally, towing capacity refers to how much weight a vehicle can safely tow. You should consider this factor if you're shopping around for a car to tow with.

You might be surprised to hear that electric vehicles can tow a similar weight to petrol or diesel cars. And while some have a lower towing capacity, others may be higher.

During a process called homologation, manufacturers figure out the maximum load a car can pull before it’s approved to tow.

How to find out your vehicle’s tow capacity

You can check the owner's manual or manufacturer's specifications to confirm its capacity.

Alternatively, you could check your car’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), usually either found on the dashboard near the windshield on the driver's side, the bonnet or inside the driver’s door. Once you've found the VIN plate, you can get the capacity by deducting the maximum allowable mass from the maximum train mass.

How does towing affect my battery’s range?

You'll see a drastic reduction in your EV's range when towing a caravan or trailer. Plan your trips appropriately and expect to get lower mileage than you would without towing.

For example, make sure you work out where you’ll be able to charge up on the way, as you’ll need to find charging stations that can fit both your EV and trailer.

What equipment do I need when towing?

Ensure you fit your electric vehicle with a tow hitch and electrical connections for trailer lights and brakes. If these aren’t factory-installed, you might need to hire a qualified mechanic.

Green number plates (used on EVs) can also be displayed on caravans and trailers being towed by electric vehicles. This gives you access to ULEZs and other zero-emission zones at no cost, depending on local regulations.

What risks are associated with driving an electric vehicle while towing?

Towing a trailer or caravan can affect your EV's handling and braking. Make sure you're comfortable towing, especially in different weather and road conditions. Taking a towing safety course is a good idea if you're new to it. You can find an accredited trainer here.

Will I need specialist insurance to tow?

You might already be covered by your current insurance policy if you’re planning to tow a caravan or trailer with your EV, but it’s essential to check first. Keep in mind that motor policies may not always cover liability while the caravan is unattached, and few, if any, will cover any loss or damage to the caravan itself, whether it’s being towed or parked up unattached. Even if your policy includes some cover for towing, it might have specific requirements or limits that you need to bear in mind.

Be aware of any towing regulations or restrictions wherever you plan to drive.  You can find which towing laws apply on the Government’s website Footnote [3].

And remember that requirements might not be the same in Europe, as some countries have specific rules about the weight, dimensions, and licensing for towing trailers and caravans.

Towing with your electric vehicle requires preparation and knowledge. It’s important to understand your EV's towing capacity, range limitations, safety, and insurance or legal requirements before you try to tow with it. Find out more about our our car insurance for your electric car.
