Personal accident frequently asked questions

What is Personal Accident Insurance?

Personal Accident Insurance pays out a lump sum benefit in the event you are involved in an accident that causes serious injury, disability or death. Personal Accident is not a life, healthcare or income protection policy. It does not provide cover in the event of injury or death caused by illness or disease.

How is an accident defined?

An accident means a single, unexpected, unforeseen and unintentional incident that is not a symptom of disease or illness.

Why should I get Personal Accident insurance?

Personal Accident insurance can help protect you and your family from the loss of income that results from not being able to work. Depending on cover chosen, an accident could pay a benefit as a result of death or injury. You’ll be covered for accidents that happen at work, during exercise, on your commute or travelling on holiday anywhere in the world.

One aspect of being involved in an accident that many don’t consider is the stress caused by financial commitments. The payment is tax free under current legislation and is paid in one lump sum.

What's excluded from a Personal Accident Policy?

Exclusions include:

  • Illness or disease unless it’s as a direct result of an accident
  • Suicide and self-inflicted injuries
  • Reckless or dangerous behaviour, including being under the influence of drink or drugs.
  • Injuries caused by being a professional sportsperson

Refer to T&Cs for full list of exclusions.

Do I need a medical, does my occupation matter?

Unlike life insurance, Personal Accident insurance doesn't need a medical, so pre-existing conditions, lifestyle choices or occupation will not impact eligibility or the premium you pay.
