Share dealing

Frequently asked questions

What is share dealing?

Share dealing is a way of buying or selling stocks and shares, also known as equities, in public listed companies and other exchange traded investments (ETIs), all with the aim of growing your money over the long term.

Remember, the value of investments can fall as well as rise. You could get back less than invested.

What is Quote and Deal?

Once you've decided which share you'd like to invest in, Quote and Deal allows you to get a quote for the best available price at that time to purchase the share or other exchange traded investment. You have up to 15 seconds in which to decide whether to accept the quote.

What is a Limit Order?

A Limit Order allows you to set a price, which is valid for up to 30 days, at which you want to trade in a particular share. If the share reaches the price you’ve set, a trade will then go ahead.

Do you offer telephone trading?

No, we only offer online trading. However, if you hit an unexpected problem or need help, you can call us on 0800 285 1088.

For our joint protection, telephone calls may be monitored and will be recorded and saved for at least five years.

How much does it cost to buy and sell shares and other exchange traded investments?

We'll charge you a flat fee of £7.50 for each trade (buy or sell) you place with us. Other charges to be aware of are: UK Stamp Duty Reserve Tax (0.5%) paid on the purchase of most UK shares online - it's automatically deducted and paid to HMRC; and the Panel on Takeovers and Mergers Levy which is £1.50 on trades over £10,000 - it's taken automatically and paid to the Takeover Panel.

Do you offer international share trading?

We only offer trading in UK shares, investment trusts and exchange traded funds (ETFs) at the moment. In the future, we hope to offer trading in international shares as well.

What is an exchange traded fund (ETF)?

An exchange traded fund (ETF) is a collective investment vehicle which is usually designed to track the performance of an index, for example the FTSE® 100.

A collective investment is a way of investing in a range of different investments on the stock market managed on your behalf by a Fund Manager.

What is an investment trust?

An investment trust is a company quoted on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) where the sole aim of the company is to invest the capital raised through the sale of shares. The shares of an investment trust are bought and sold in the same way as other listed companies.
